I will say, the two smaller knobs did not feel very sturdy. The other two knobsвЂ“one for volume and one for squelch (more about the squelch knob below!)вЂ“have a вЂsmoothвЂ™ turn and, although stacked one above the other, they are still quite easy to operate even for people with larger hands. The dial is sturdy and has a вЂbumpyвЂ™ feel when turned, which I happen to like. The oversized knob on the right side of the screen is for tuning or changing options in the menu. There are three knobs and 9 buttons totalвЂ“6 buttons along the bottom of the screen and 3 auxiliary buttons. The design of the radioвЂ™s face isВ quite natural. Besides getting somewhat warm, I was never alarmed by its temperature. Speaking of size, I thought that the IC-2300H might вЂrun hotвЂ™ like the Yaesu 2900R does, which has a notably larger heat sink. Although it doesnвЂ™t have a detachable faceplate, itвЂ™s size might allow forВ certain vehicle configurationsВ where other radios are too big.

Compared with the beastly appearance of some radios like the Yaesu 2900R, it has a very comfortable design, one that isВ equally fitting on a nice desk as it is out in the field.Д¬oming in at a surprisingly light 2 lbs 6 oz, the IC-2300H is one of the lightest radios in its class, making it perfect for a portable kit. The difference is that the IC-2300H doesnвЂ™t really look mil-spec, which I take as a good thing. Like its competition (namely, the Kenwood TM-281 and Yaesu 2900R), itвЂ™s built to mil-spec. The IC-2300H is attractive as it is tough. I like that it doesnвЂ™t add any extra material to the back of the mic however,В because of the design, it does rattle around a little more than a hang-up holder. Icom, instead,В uses a вЂhookвЂ™ system, which allows the mic to be be hung on the included mounting hook or on anything else you may have available. Most of the microphones IвЂ™m used toВ employ the typical вЂhang-upвЂ™ mount, where the metal post on the microphoneвЂ™s back slides into the holder.

For me, the lack of a proper manual is a foul by Icom.ДЄnother slight oddity is the microphone mountВ design. WhatвЂ™s worse, the included quick-start guide is a clumsy, multi-fold sheet of paper that takes up an entire tabletop whenВ reading. I happen to prefer learning from an actual booklet rather than a computer screen, and itвЂ™s easier for reference.

Even thoughВ itвЂ™s very easy to find a PDF version of the manual online, itвЂ™s still frustrating that they donвЂ™t include it with the radio. It falls well short, in my opinion, and only includes very basic setup instructions. The вЂQuick-Start GuideвЂ™ included in the package is similar to the guide IвЂ™ve seenВ included in other Icom products. With so many types of cables being used today, it becomes annoying to buy yet one more item in order to use the radio.

ItвЂ™s great for Icom to throw in the software with the radio, but IвЂ™d really like to see manufacturers startВ including the actual programming cable. The CD contains IcomвЂ™s programming software, which looks and operates just like Chirp. The DMS (Dynamic Memory Scan) system allows you to scan selected banks from 10 memory banks by simply adding and deleting bank links.Radio, Handheld Mic, power cable, microphone hook (more on that later), mounting bracket (with hardware), Quick-start guide, extra fuse,and the software CD. The IC-2300H supports various scan types for maximum reception to suit your needs. The rugged aluminum diecast chassis provides effective heat dissipation and keeps RF output even during high duty cycle continuous transmission. This mobile has been tested to and has passed the latest MIL-STD 810 G specifications including shock, vibration and temperature tests. Rough roads wonвЂ™t stop the IC-2300H from working. The bottom of the display indicates the available front panel functions. Select either the amber, yellow or green backlight color. A large LCD with 6 alphanumeric characters offers a good viewing angle for mobile operation. The IC-2300HвЂ™s basic panel layout includes a simple user interface. While keeping those basic features, the IC-2300H is packed in to a smaller body (in depth) than the IC-2200H. The IC-2300H, 144MHz mobile, retains the same basic features from the popular IC-2200H powerful 65W output power, simple-to-use user interface, built-in CTCSS and DTCS encoder/decoder, etc.
